2008-03-29 Atlanta: A city that was fit for a king - Americas, Travel - The Independent

I head out for breakfast at the Sweet Auburn Bread Company. Martin Luther King Jr was born and raised in the Sweet Auburn district, a walkable neighbourhood of wooden houses that still centres on the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where both King and his father preached. The Sweet Auburn Bread Company is a tiny bakery-cum-coffee shop that serves traditional Southern food. Its chef and owner, Sonya Jones, urges me to try the homemade Georgian peach preserves on my smoked-sausage sandwich. Theres also bacon, and buttermilk biscuits. The breads are warm and soft, and baked the way that Southerners like them: a little snap of crispness from the crust and then a warm and pillowy inside.

Tescos response to the well-documented consumer demand for more local produce means that the concept of local food with a provenance moves into a new area that encompasses everything from speciality, high-value products to everyday staples like milk, potatoes, beer, ice cream, cider and yoghurt.

Like many of its competitors, the multiple retailer started to source small volumes of often niche or speciality products four or five years ago, but now acknowledges that this did not really work. What has made the difference is putting in regional sourcing teams in each of eight regions. The company already had offices in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the South West team was set up some 18 months ago.
