Tescos response to the well-documented consumer demand for more local produce means that the concept of local food with a provenance moves into a new area that encompasses everything from speciality, high-value products to everyday staples like milk, potatoes, beer, ice cream, cider and yoghurt.

Like many of its competitors, the multiple retailer started to source small volumes of often niche or speciality products four or five years ago, but now acknowledges that this did not really work. What has made the difference is putting in regional sourcing teams in each of eight regions. The company already had offices in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the South West team was set up some 18 months ago.
