2010-09-01 Food protein U. S. -bound - Winnipeg Free Press

Burcon, which was formed in the late 90s from a Winnipeg company that was doing research on canola, has now developed patented extraction technologies to produce two different canola protein isolates designed to be used as food ingredients. There are currently no canola proteins available in the commercial marketplace.

The company said it believes the proteins can be included as ingredients in all sorts of food products, including as a protein alternative to egg or powdered egg in dairy products, processed meats, grain products, fruit and vegetable juices and beverages, salad dressings, and meal replacements and nutritional bars.

2010-08-30 Bone-fusion protein raises questions about doctors financial stakes - JSOnline

Since recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2, the biological agent used in Infuse, was approved by the FDA for fusion surgery, early concerns about its widespread, unapproved use and adverse reactions in patients have materialized. Studies have warned that it can cause life-threatening swelling in the neck, form bone in unwanted locations and possibly fuel the growth of cancer cells or spark adverse immune system reactions.

The Infuse treatment consists of a tapered, metallic fusion cage that looks like a thimble and the BMP-2 bone graft substitute. The substitute, which is placed inside the LT-Cage, includes the genetically engineered human protein (BMP-2) that is placed on an absorbable sponge.

The story of BMP-2 raises questions about whether doctors should be allowed to do clinical trial research involving products that might enrich them or the company they work for.

2010-08-29 Rodent of the Week: Can having rheumatoid arthritis protect against Alzheimers disease

Researchers injected the protein into two groups of mice -- a group that was genetically altered to develop memory problems mimicking Alzheimers disease and a group of normal, old-age mice. At the end of 20 days of injections with GM-CSF the memory-impaired mice performed much better on tests measuring their working memory and learning. Their performance was similar to the mice without dementia. The normal mice who received GM-CSF performed slightly better on memory tests than the normal mice who were not injected with the protein. The treated Alzheimers mice also had a 50 pct. decrease in beta amyloid plaques in the brains, the hallmark characteristic of Alzheimers disease.

2010-08-27 Nutrition experts warn: Protein shakes arent always healthy

There are a few reasons one would supplement. One reason is if their diet is deficient in quality protein some vegetarians, vegans or someone who makes food choices that involve very little protein and needs more balance. Other reasons would be someone who is very active and cannot get enough protein from whole foods because they become too full, someone who wants to build muscle or does really intense workouts and needs quick recovery post-workout," said Leanne Hamlet, personal trainer and fitness instructor from Stroudsburg. "It is very important to add extra protein into the diet when working out to repair the muscles and recover faster. The average exerciser works out 30 to 45 minutes a day, three to five times a week. They usually do not need to supplement in the form of a drink or bar. "

2010-08-20 Delaying fat digestion to curb appetite

In this study, they found that a normally-stable whey protein is partially broken down when it is attached to the surface of an emulsion. When a surfactant is introduced, this acts synergistically with the fat, breaking down the protein layer even more effectively. With the barrier weakened, access is improved for the enzymes and bile salts that break down fat.

Much of the fat in processed foods is eaten in the form of emulsions such as soups, yoghurt, ice cream and mayonnaise,"" said Dr Peter Wilde from the Institute of Food Research, an institute of BBSRC. "We are unpicking the mechanisms of digestion used to break them down so we can design fats in a rational way that are digested more slowly. "

Most analysts expect food prices to ease with the good monsoon rains, but have expressed concern that the high food inflation has transferred into non-food items. There continues to be some inflation in pulses and milk products. But I expect food inflation to ease, especially with the good rains, said DK Joshi, chief economist at credit rating agency Crisil.

Belying these expectations, food price inflation snapped a two-week trend and shot back into double digits to 11. 4 pct. in late July. However, finance ministrys chief economic adviser Kaushik Basu brushed aside these concerns.
