Nevada-based Basic Food Flavors has been contacting its customers about the Salmonella problem for the last week. U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials say hydrolyzed vegetable protein is used in thousands in products.

FDA is requiring that any products containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein from Basic Food Flavors be recalled unless it has been put through a "kill stop" that would kill the bacteria.

Brockton MA-based Concord Foods Inc Friday joined the nationwide recall of products made with hydrolyzed vegetable protein made by Basic Food Flavors.

Johnnys Fine Foods of Tacoma, Wash. , is recalling French Dip Powdered Au Jus in 6 ounce bottles and French Dip Powdered Au Jus in 1. 1 ounce foil packets, because it may be contaminated with salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. There are no known illnesses in connection with the product to date.
