2010-09-02 Our own Middle East conflict - Ben Smith

Finally, the heart of ECI and rsquo;s challenge to the members of Congress they are attacking is a letter to the President about Gaza, which calls for permitting a greater flow of food and humanitarian goods to Gaza while ensuring security-based screening for weapons and other dangerous materials. Since the government of Israel has itself called the previous closure guidelines and ldquo;counter-productive and rdquo; and altered the conditions of the closure in exactly the manner called for in the Congressional letter - what exactly is ECI calling for in Gaza A harsher closure than that currently imposed by the government of Israel, that doesn and rsquo;t simply deny basic goods to the civilian population of Gaza but harms Israel and rsquo;s standing in the eyes of the international community Why do they find this an appropriate place to

2010-08-31 During Ramadan, commit to working toward peace

What is urgently needed now is leadership at the grass roots level for bringing peace to the Middle East. This requires organization, purity of intent and an action plan to achieve clearly articulated goals. This is possible if we try hard and bring passion and determination to our efforts. We have a sufficient number of Egyptians, Syrians, Jordanians, Saudis, Lebanese, Turks, Palestinians and Iranians, for example, from which to draw people who would be willing to be grass roots leaders. In our big mosques, we can find them. Surely, they have connections with families and friends in their respective countries, where they have roots. Delegates for each of these countries can interconnect to put issues on the table for a civil discussion. The first place to start will be peace talks between Palestine and Israel.

2010-08-29 Letters: tree-cutting permit, PERS, gorge casino, Middle East peace,

Its probably not a bad idea to use parking fees to pay for a marketing campaign for downtown Portland ("Downtown drivers fuel a marketing effort," . However, if anyone is persuaded to come downtown or to the Pearl district, heres what theyll see: filth -- food wrappers, pop cans, beer cans, takeout food containers and countless cigarette butts strewn around the streets and sidewalks.

George Wills column "No space for peace in the Middle East" is based on misrepresentations of facts. And if you believe his misstatements of fact, you, too, might believe there is no chance for peace.

The city of Portlands unfriendly attitude toward business was confirmed again in the article "Oil company plans to cut Forest Park trees. " Kinder Morgan Energy Partners operates a gas/diesel pipeline and to meet required federal regulations for aerial inspection, 300-plus trees along the path must be cut down.

2010-08-28 Iraq seven years later: Was the war worth it

In a USA TODAY Poll, 60 pct. of Americans say "No," when asked "Do you think the situation in Iraq was worth going to war over" Similar majorities either felt that the war did not make the USA safer from terrorism or made no difference. The same was said of whether the political situation in the Middle East is more stable.

We are significantly safer as a result of what I consider to be a victory in Iraq," he says. "It cost too much; it went on too long; mistakes were made along the way. But ultimately, if we had withdrawn, it would have had a devastating impact on the entire Middle East and our credibility in the world.

2010-08-27 UPDATE: Hikma Posts Bumper US Sales But Competition May Loom

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Middle Eastern drug company Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC (HIK. LN) said Thursday bumper sales of generic medicines in the U. S. helped offset weaker growth in its home markets during the first half of 2010.

In the U. S. , Hikmas sales have benefited from a Food and Drug Administration clampdown on shoddy manufacturing by overseas generic drug makers but competition is expected to heat up, as rivals are expected to soon re-enter the market.
