Ever since I won The Next Food Network Star Ive kept a notebook where I jot down what I make for my family, and when I need recipes I look to see what I have been feeding them. I love food, and Ive always loved food. One of mine and my husbands favorite things to do on date night is to go have a great meal, relax, talk and unwind. I find inspiration everywhere, from what I serve at the dinner table to the meals I have at an amazing restaurant," she said.

2010-03-08 Pacific NW Discovering Seattles soul in its small eateries Seattle Times Newspaper

SOMETIMES THE hardest kind of food to get in America is American food. Ask an Asian-American with Southern roots. Trieu Dinh and his Houston-bred cousins recently opened the Crawfish King restaurant in Seattles Chinatown International District. Most of the faces in the restaurant are Asian. Many Vietnamese immigrants landed in the gulf, making a living fishing for shrimp because it is what they knew.

Increasingly, eating the best traditional food requires leaving the city center, out to its edges where the immigrant class can better afford to live, places like Tukwila, Kent and White Center. Built around a few walkable blocks, downtown White Center is a living diorama of the American melting pot most of us proudly proclaim but seldom step into.

2010-03-04 Retirement living seniors in Lake Forest, California, have access to free pet food

Happily for retirement living residents of Lake Forest, California, seniors and the unemployed will have access to free pet food this weekend because of the efforts of local pet charities, according to the Orange County Register.

Many of the unemployed people who pick up pet food eventually get jobs, and they come by and drop off a check or some pet food," Bruer told the news provider. "In the time we have been giving out pet food, weve seen only about 30 percent of the people still in the program. "

2010-03-03 Pooja R. Mottl: Has Wellness Become A Luxury Good

But just recently, when an editor asked me to write an opinion piece on how living well is becoming out of reach for a lot of Americans due to a myriad of constraints like time, cost, omnipresent cheap food, etc. , it really pushed me to better define how we should be delivering healthy living messages because "wellness" does not necessarily mean the same thing for one person as it does for another.

Even if you can get your hands on it, can you afford it Research has shown that nutrient-deplete foods average around usd. 1. 76 per 1,000 calories versus healthy, nutrient-rich foods which can average nearly 10 times more than that. If you can buy an entire lunch meal at a fast food restaurant for usd. 1 versus a head of organic broccoli for more than usd. 3, eating for your wellness becomes a pretty tough decision. Healthy foods simply cost more. And, unfortunately, vegetables and fruits are becoming luxury goods for many. So its not surprising that scientists find the highest rates of obesity among people in lower income groups.

2010-03-01 Opinion: Ruben Navarrette Jr. : A little stigma is just fine for California food stamp recipients - San Jose Mercury News

The idea is part nanny because government, having fulfilled its other responsibilities, has resolved to cut the fat by battling obesity. And part welfare because our society continues to unintentionally harm the poor, the unemployed and the underemployed by assuring them that the world owes them a living. Theyre also entitled to not feel embarrassed for being on public assistance, and thus to remove traces of stigma, are now given electronic cards rather than stamps to make their purchases.

2010-02-26 Frank Achtien, 1921-2010; food pantry volunteer in Elmhurst

So several years ago, after seeing the growing need to feed the hungry in Chicagos near west suburbs, Mr. Achtien reflected on his World War II experiences and began volunteering at the Yorkfield Food Pantry, which is adjacent to Yorkfield Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst, loved ones say.

While living in Amsterdam in 1945, Mr. Achtien married his first wife, Margje, with whom he had four children. She died in 1989.

During that time, he also witnessed the plundering of treasure and food, and the effect scarcity of basic essentials had on a population.
