2009-01-05 Jamaica Gleaner News - COMMENTARY: Latin America and the Caribbean in 2009 . zoning in on the economically vulnerable - Business

After the recent food and energy crises made food on families tables prohibitively expensive, the most vulnerable sectors now must deal with a phenomenon that is not a product of their own countries, but which does affect them directly.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, social protection networks represent a solid foundation upon which a broader platform can be built to cover the most vulnerable population and to protect the human development progress already achieved.

In this manner, we will be better prepared for the storms aftermath and ready to resume a vigorous agenda to reduce the social gap separating the rich from the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean.

NEWARK, N. J. - There is part of the Christmas story that resonates deeply with immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean: The journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem when they were turned away at every door.

In a nine-day ritual carried out across America and New Jersey, devote Catholics , mostly immigrants from Mexico , replicate the journey by going door to door each night symbolically asking for shelter, singing religious songs and sharing food.

Distance is not always a problem. Unlike the complex relations of distance that touch us both personally and professionally, the great distance and scant historical contacts between China and Latin American countries has allowed the political and economic relations between them to flow free of any historical baggage.

Lunches. Learning about Spanish food may prompt a child to want to learn how to cook this type of food. If as an adult, the grownup child cooks Spanish food, soon his or her own children may start cooking the same food, and another culture may be spread amongst a household.

Also, small children who learn Spanish will most likely learn about Spanish food. Learning about different kinds of food from different cultures is valuable because it makes it seem as if other food exists besides unhealthy fast food or even the fried snacks found

Rather than donate to a pantry or food bank, the club worked with Kiwanis and the school administration to deliver food to specific families in Montville. This year, food was collected for 20 families in need. More than 50 club members and faculty stayed after school on to pack the food into 40 Thanksgiving-decorated boxes to be delivered by the Kiwanis club the following day.

While the Key Club was collecting actual food, the Art Club took a different approach. Advisors Sharon Pflug and Paul Moench started the "Empty Bowls Project" at Montville Township High School. Members made ceramic bowls that were sold to the public. The club raised usd. 200 for the Market Street Mission in Morristown, feeding 75 people Thanksgiving dinner.

Some 37 countries currently face a food crisis, sparking tensions and social conflicts. Riots and demonstrations first broke out in Latin America and then spread to the African continent and Southeast Asia.

Climate change has also taken a toll on the global food supply, triggering a continued increase in the number of hungry people across the world. The number of people plagued by hunger increased to 925 million from the 850 million last year, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization said.
