2010-03-15 Food: Carmines is a secret worth revealing

Our friend, Lora, who had lived abroad, joined us for an evening of good Italian food. She met us under the big sign that read "Carmines" at 4:30 exactly - we were there for the early bird special on Friday night.

Carmines had become filled with people around 5:30 p. m. Many people had discovered what we now knew: Carmines served good, authentic Italian food in a calm, peaceful place. It was time to make room for others to enjoy their Friday evening dinner out.

2010-03-13 Staten Island restaurant review: Francescas Steakhouse and Italian Restaurant

STATEN ISLAND, NY -- On Richmond Road, one block west of New Dorp Lane, sits the recently opened Francescas Steak House and Italian Restaurant. Its menu of hearty Italian dishes and carnivorous grilled fare seemed perfectly suited to the damp grayness of late winter days. We settled in.

Appetizers and salads were predominately seafood, no complaint here, and two really impressed. Ahi Tuna Tartar, sushi grade as advertised, flavored with capers and lemon and protected by grilled asparagus spears, was delicious. As was Crab Cake, with lobster cream sauce and surrounded by roasted potato and vegetables.

2010-03-10 In Australia, Italian vino outsells French The Australian

Maurizio Ugge, wine managing director with food and beverage importer Arquilla, attributes the growth to improvements in the quality of Italian wine over the past decade as well as the recent strength of the Australian dollar, which has made premium imported wines more affordable.

Tuscany winemaker Antonio Zaccheo said sales of Italian wines in Australia were once limited to Italian restaurants and drinkers of Italian origin, but as their tastes matured more mainstream drinkers were seeking new flavours.

The finding, from a long-term study of almost 20,000 women, suggests that the body processes the calories in alcohol differently to those in food.

It is thought that resveratrol, a plant chemical said to have abilities from extending life to burning off junk food, widens the blood vessels, boosting blood flow to the brain.

The finding suggests that calories from alcohol are processed differently to those in foods.

But it does help explain why French and Italian women seem to avoid piling on the pounds, despite routinely drinking wine with their meals.

2010-03-07 Santa Caterina on Italys Amalfi Coast gives Ben Fogle a taste for the Mediterranean Mail Online

Marina and I were in food heaven. We devoured kilos of the soft, rich buffalo mozzarella for which this region is so famous. Marina, a party planner, recounted how one Londonbased client sent his private jet to Naples on a daily basis to bring back buckets of freshlymade mozzarella and we fantasised about doing the same.

I love dramatic coastlines, fresh food and fine wine, and so, shortly before I left for Antarctica on a two-month expedition, my wife Marina decided to introduce me to one of her favourite places: the Amalfi coast.

But on to the food. My husband ordered Filet of Sole Francese and was still talking about how good it was a day after our dinner. The filet was first dipped in a light egg batter, then sauteed and served with a lemon-butter-white-wine sauce, which made the dish. It was light and oh, so tasty. Haricot vert were served with the fish. You can order pasta instead of a vegetable, if you wish.
