2009-04-09 Metro Times - Food: Sublime continental

Rochester Rd. , Troy, 248-689-7070; usd. usd. : Raveena Reddys Ashoka has an extensive menu, glorious interior decorations, and a wide variety of Indian foods from all over the India. Consider the Maharashtian-style fars bhaji, where green beans are cooked with freshly grated coconut in a thick, creamy sauce colored deep yellow by turmeric. The next plate over could very well contain bagara baingan, a dish with little round eggplants that are stuffed with peanut and sesame seed paste, served in tomato sauce seasoned with tamarind. Imagine someone behind you eating hyderabadi, a lamb dish with yogurt and tomato sauce, spiced by green chile peppers. The menu goes on and on like this, and theres even a section devoted to Indian-Chinese hybrids, a style with a sizable following in India.

2009-07-28 Food and Beverage News: Top Stories - Experts highlight biotechnology applications in F and B and dietary supplements

He said, "Biotechnology will affect food in the following way, inventing new products, lowering costs, improving the microbial process that food processors rely on. The use of enzyme would only ensure high returns on investment. It will help India a lot in the waste treatment. " Suhas Chaudhary from FDA Maharashtra suggested that the food and the drug laws could be used as facilitators rather than inhibitors by the manufacturers. The loopholes used by the manufacturers in dodging the law by placing their products as food and not drugs and thereby undergoing lesser intervention needs to be stopped. He asked the manufacturer to follow self-governance when bringing their products into the markets. Also he showed concern over the apathy showed by manufacturers in participating in consultations of FSSAI. He further said that most Indian

2009-08-25 Food and Beverage News: Top Stories - Feature Need to wipe off widespread inefficiencies in food value chain

Main sectors comprising the Indian food processing industry are fruits and vegetables, dairy products, marine and fish, meat and poultry, edible oils, staples, alcoholic and Non-alcoholic beverages, bread and bakery, confectionery and packed foods, among others. In India the organised and unorganised sector is about 40 pct. which is much lower than most other countries. In India, the level of processing is 2 pct. for fruits and vegetables, around 35 pct. for milk, 21 pct. for meat and 6 pct. for poultry products. These are quite low by international standards, as processing of agriculture produce is around 70 pct. in Brazil, 78 pct. in the Philippines and 80 pct. in Malaysia, according to a recent study jointly conducted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Technopak Advisors (P) Ltd.

2009-10-10 Idea Lab - Indias Malnutrition Dilemma

The Right to Food movement is deeply divided between those who believe the bill is a good first step and those who believe it is doomed to failure unless Indian society is radically overhauled. But that overhaul would presumably involve a state willing to follow a course closer to that of China: a capitalist economy, to be sure, but one in which the state gave more of the orders (and saw that they were carried out). In India at present that outcome seems unlikely. A great many food activists seem both bewildered by the new capitalist India in which they find themselves and increasingly nostalgic for the all-controlling state that prevailed before the 1980s. After all, as Professor Haddad pointed out to me, it is not as if India lacks either the resources or the capacity to address food issues head-on. The proof of this is that

2009-06-01 July 4th weekend, food and fireworks - Washington DC and Baltimore Area - Chowhound

In terms of your selections, I have been to both Passage to India and Rasika. If you like Indian food, then no contest Passage to India is better. However, the pickles and spices listed on the final page are a MUST ORDER to truly appreciate the food. They could make footwear taste good. Rasika is a European restaurant serving their own version of Indian food. Its a good place, I like it, but I dont mistake it for straight-up Indian. If you go, the crispy spinach dish is a MUST ORDER.

2009-11-14 Can India Achieve Food Security : TreeHugger

Environmental damage wrought by the first revolution -- degraded soil from pesticides and fertilizers, mismanaged groundwater -- make it a tougher challenge this time around. In Punjab state, the center and poster child for the first go round, groundwater reserves have declined rapidly, and Sardara Singh Johl, an economist and former chairman of Indias Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, said there would be very little water available for farming in the state. "This could severely compromise the food security of India. Government should realise the gravity of the situation and allocate funds for research to conserve groundwater," he said.

2009-04-12 The Hindu : Book Review : Corporatisation trade-offs

Coxs central thesis that unending growth is unsustainable and that sharp reduction in economic growth would be required to deal with the problems of global warming is very well presented throughout the book. But his attempts to arrive at this conclusion through his critique of the food and medicine empire is not convincing. These are essentially two separate themes where the primary link is the limitless population growth. Most demand for food and medicine originate in basic human needs of the ever increasing population not the relative wants created by industry. Doubtlessly, chemical wastes from drug factories clog the Patancherus of India with untold harm to the unsuspecting citizens but these are instances of massive failure of governance.
