News on Gujarati Food2010-03-13 At A Time Old world charmWe went to a place called Vaishali, where you sit on the floor and eat a multitude of very appetizing, essentially Gujarati food on palm leaves. The place is a shack, with rows of people seated, waiting to be served. And the place is very clean as you can imagine. The place is made of bamboos or wooden poles I am not clear. It was twenty-three years ago. I was still on with her. Visit Ahmedabad and your mind gets entangled with perfection. 2010-03-12 Ideal Corner: Motorcycles, Parsi food and raspberry colaFor the uninitiated, Parsi cuisine is a tantalising mix of Persian food influenced by the Gujarati style of cooking and is popular in Mumbai. The curries are spice laden and flavored with nuts and apricots. The food is primarily non-vegetarian. Vegetables, when they make their rare appearance, are almost always topped with eggs. And at Ideal Corner, Parsi food is served the way its supposed to be. I love their Jerdaloo Salli Gosh (tender mutton in a rich gravy with apricots, garnished with deep fried slivers of potatoes). And I once remember eating many portions of their Patra Fish (pomfret marinated in a green chutney and steamed in a banana leaf). And on many occasions Ive sneaked a quick nap after devouring platefuls of their Dhansak (mutton cooked with spiced lentils, served with browned rice and kebabs). And I have survived the rest of the day without any sustenance after eating their Bharuchi Akuri (eggs scrambled with cream, raisins, cashew nuts and tossed with salli). Food blogger Sanjiv Khamgaonkars series on obscure Mumbai restaurants serving delicious down-to-earth food continues with a look at Ideal Corner.
2010-03-11 INDIA IN PAKISTANThe community still eats food prepared in the Gujarati way, especially papars (papadoms), gathia (a sort of snack) and sweets. The women wear long skirts and the mean wear pajamas with shorter diameter compared to Bihari or Hyderabadi pajamas. You can leave your home for whatever reason economic, religious, or for security as people have been doing for centuries. But the homeland never quite leaves you. This is also the case with migrants who came to Pakistan from various states of India in 1947 onwards. Their place of birth is etched in their hearts. Many of them, elderly now, live in localities named after places in India. Their food and dress remain much as they were accustomed to back in India. 2010-02-27 All About Alibaug, Travel - Quick Trip - Mumbai MirrorSpeaking of food, it and rsquo;s obviously rewarding to be a sea-food fan when in these parts. The prawns, Bombay duck, pomfrets and oysters are lip-smacking. The veggies needn and rsquo;t pack anything from home either, everything from Gujarati thalis to Chinese noodles are available on the popular beaches. But, we and rsquo;d suggest some simple Konkani veg-fare instead. And don and rsquo;t miss the sol-kadi. People in India are smart and know that Congress is doing this whole drama, to make it look charitable, and make its allies look good in public eyes. It is like a store owner who raises prices excessively and then offers 20 pct. discount. All food/goods are finally transported by Trucks to stores, and this big raise in petrol/diesel will raise the cost of all food/goods in India. This will lead to much higher inflation. Congress should act more matured, and respect the intelligence of Indian people. 2010-02-24 Comments : Reining in food price top priority: PresidentIn the matter of food prices, Prevention would have been better than Cure. For the Government and the bureaucracy supposedly manned by the Best and the Brightest Indians, waking up after food inflation has reached 20 pct. and when food has gone beyond the reach of the poor and AAM AADMI, it is probably too little too late. Blaming the increase in per capita income rise and changing food habits for food inflation is an insult to the common people of India. Certainly these did not happen overnight. The fact of the matter is the Government has been callous and has been busy passing the buck and politicking. It is SHAMEFUL for the Government to douse the fires of Inflation only after enormous damage has been done. Let there be a white paper to pin the responsibility on the culprits. Let the blame be fixed objectively without taking into
