She was a great cook, too, with flourishes worthy of New Orleans. She put Panacea, Fla. , oysters in her cornbread dressing and snowy lard in the fry pan. She didnt cut corners when it came to real butter, salt pork or other fatty seasonings. If her farm table had been magically transported to the French Quarter and covered with a linen cloth, and if her generous servings were subdivided several times, she would have been the toast of this town, its collective sensitive palate notwithstanding.

2009-01-03 Greek tanker flees pirate attack

Caption: A handout photo by the French navy taken at sea on shows members of the EPE, an embedded protection team, performing observation duty aboard the Frigate Jean de Vienne as it convoys merchant ships near the coast of Somalia, where numerous acts of piracy pose a constant danger to maritime traffic. To combat piracy off the coast of Somalia it has been launched the first EU naval military operation, Operation Atalante. Its mandate is to protect vessels chartered by the World Food Program which are delivering food aid to displaced Somalis, to protect merchant ships sailing in the area where it is deployed, to monitor the areas off the coast of Somalia at risk for maritime activities, and to take the necessary measures to deter and prevent acts of piracy and armed robbery off these coasts. 2009-01-03 Industry Insiders: Chef Corey Lee of French Laundry Fame - BlackBook

You hear these terms like ultra-modern cuisine or molecular gastronomy and no. 8212;whatever you want to call it. But to me, the basic idea is that you have a scientific understanding of whats happening when you cook and what happens to the food. Certainly this trend is happening with food thats very new and very modern, and its something I like not necessarily because of the results but because its allowed chefs to have a deeper understanding of what theyre doing on a scientific basis and not just out of tradition. There are so many misconceptions and things you were taught from previous chefs, or that youve read in books, that are just blatantly wrong; like folklore, really. And finally were coming into an age where chefsnot just industrial chefs, like,

2009-01-03 UFR in the Big Easy: On chants, hedonism and football Upon Further Review

We settled into one of the 1,156 places that offered Cajun cooking, live music, sports on the tube and spirits aplenty. The band was a Zydeco hybrid that had a jubilant accordian player, even when his bandmates lapsed into a maudlin cover of the Eagles "Take it to the Limit. " They made up for that with a spirited Johnny Cash medley which made me realize for the first time that the missing element from Cashs sound was a little accordion. Even though the place was touristy, the food was terrific. I had a half chicken, with some jambalaya and french fries. I split a Hurricane with my wife. Good times. On the way home, I caught a strand of white beads that someone tossed off a balcony and almost brained me with . an occasional hazard in that sector. That and the awkwardness of walking with your in-laws past the 300

2009-01-02 Al Jazeera English - Europe - Livni: No crisis in Gaza Strip

The Israeli cabinet rejected a French proposal for a ceasefire on Wednesday on the grounds it was seeking a "durable solution" and that a temporary truce would simply allow Hamas fighters to regroup and re-arm.

The Czech Republic has now taken over the EU presidency and a spokesman for the countrys foreign office confirmed to Al Jazeera that it would be continuing the line of the French ceasefire proposal.

The strip, home to 1. 5 million people, is already suffering shortages of power, food and medical supplies due to a two-year blockade imposed by Israel on the area.

2009-01-02 Israel rebuffs calls for halt in airstrikes -

For many Gazans, Wednesday brought a small measure of relief as rain curtailed the number of airstrikes. Fearing a ground invasion when the weather clears, Palestinians emerged from hiding in their homes and stocked up on whatever food, candles and batteries they could find.

Said at a meeting of his security advisers that the French proposal lacked guarantees to ensure that Hamas would stop firing rockets and would be prevented from smuggling more weapons into Gaza through tunnels from Egypt.

2009-01-02 A mother to grapes and children

We were just having dinner with friends, and returned to one of the classic of all classic wine pairings - foie gras with Sauternes. There is something so magical - its rich and rich, salty and sweet - and both are delicious. My favorite food is bistro-type food, so I love drinking the Rhone wines with the French country food.

The Vineyard Wine and Cheese Company in Escondido (San Diego County). A deli more like Oakville. It was a pretty good little shop, considering Escondido is a food wasteland. Well, except for good Mexican food. At 18, I became assistant manager. The manager tried to teach me about wine without letting me drink it since I was underage.

2009-01-02 Its all about the fitness resolutions

Europeans dont worry so much about what they eat, but how much and when. Plate sizes in America are larger than in any other country. Maybe it goes along with the mindset that created Hummers, but those amounts of food are unnecessary.

But, in addition to that, our food schedule as of late has been flipped upside down and screwed around backward. Somewhere along the way of submitting to that getting-things-done-quickly mindset, we messed up our most important meal.

2009-01-02 A moveable feast - Business

Murawinski, who runs Chefs NYC catering in Sarasota, acknowledges that the economy has put a dent in business and says cooking at Bonni Bakes is a good way to make extra income and gain exposure for his French-inspired cuisine.

The arrangement also works well for Brown, a baker who is still very passionate about food but no longer wants the food business to occupy all of her time.

But Brown also didn and rsquo;t want to be completely out of the food business, either. So the rotating chef idea was born.
