2010-03-16 Op-Ed Contributor - The Death of the R. S. V. P.

My experiment arose from plans for an evening of food, drink and literature, with readings by myself and two other writers, at a restaurant. Not exactly a drop-in-if-youre-around kind of thing, so I asked friends to R. S. V. P. My initial message brought in a dozen responses, and the follow-up a few more, but days before the event I had a paltry 23. Not 23 who planned to come, but 23 who had bothered to respond. Half my invitees had blown me off. Why I wasnt peddling life insurance, after all.

2010-03-11 A sin tax might discourage us from unhealthy foods Health Blog

Our findings suggest that policies to alter the price of less healthful foods and beverages may be one possible mechanism for steering US adults toward a more healthful diet, the authors write. While such policies will not solve the obesity epidemic in its entirety and may face considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers, they could prove an important strategy to address overconsumption, help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among US adults.

2010-03-06 Fatter Chips may Help People Stay Slim

However representatives of food bodies are furious, "They should be concentrating on fast food outlets who make the thin French fries, not the traditional independent chip shop. At the moment it seems like a case of picking on the little guys because they cant touch the big guys," the Daily Express quoted Douglas Roxburgh of the National Federation of Fish Fryers as saying.

Officials from the Food Standards Agency are suggesting that consumers must eat fatter or thicker chips to stay slim. They feel that chunkier fish and chips have lesser calories and could help people stay slim.

2010-03-03 Mon Dieu. Macarons at McDonalds shock the French

Macarons are not meant to be mainstream, Laetitia Brock, a native of Paris who blogs about French culture from Washington, told the Journal. Very mushy, she noted about the Starbucks versions of the crme-stuffed cookies that were offered over the holidays.

Lightwine later told The Wall Street Journal, It was so weird to see these delicate, very French pastries in something thats so American. Its kind of like if you showed up in a tuxedo to a baseball game, it was so out of place.

How about a side of macarons with that Big Mac The pastel-colored pastries, normally sold in Parisian caf and eacute;s, have been showing up on less sophistocated shelves.

2010-03-01 South Bend Tribune: Canada knows French toast

Now when I say French toast, I dont mean the kind that I grew up on. We would have the traditional egg and milk combination with some cinnamon. I can remember my dad making it, and wed eat it with granulated sugar instead of syrup. I think it was something he had when he was a kid and it stuck. It might have been that they couldnt afford syrup.

Something that hasnt been discussed much during this Olympics is the food. I had an opportunity to work in Canada for a few weeks when I was beginning my career as a chef. A few things struck me as being different there than here in the States.
