2010-03-08 Tainted dips sold in Quebec, food agency says

OConnor refused to forecast whether this could be the start of a potential avalanche of food recalls all related to a common food additive, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), which is used in a wide range of products but produced by only a handful of big suppliers. HVP is added to many foods - including dips, salad dressings, chips, sauces, hotdogs, soups and frozen dinners - in order to give them a meaty or savory flavour.

2010-03-03 Effingham Daily News, Effingham, IL - Grant allows Edgewood youths to learn about Earths natural foods

When teachers serve the fruits and vegetables, they ask the child to try the food, and allow the taste, texture and smell to determine whether or not the food is a choice for the student. The goal of the grant is to educate and expose the children to the wide array of choices not to force kids to eat their vegetables.

Classes have even cracked a whole coconut and eaten the inside. Students also had a baked potato bar and were able to learn what normally tops the rooted vegetable. To some, the foods seem like normal staples in a typical home, but the fruits and veggies are a real treat for others.
