2010-03-11 Washington Cooks: Recipe for a Lenten meal

However, there was no sign of suffering as Parrell surveyed the scene on a recent Friday in the hall of the Epiphany of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church. Quart-size containers of warm potato-and-cheese pirohis (pierogis) with onion sauce were packed for 4 p. m. takeout. Steam trays stood ready to receive hot foods from the kitchen, served from 5 to 7 p. m. , a time that points parishioners toward the churchs weekly Lenten service. Tables with goods for sale -- Slovak and Ukrainian crafts, religious items, holiday candy, packaged meats from northern "Pennslavinia" -- flanked one side of the dining area, which seats 300. On the opposite side, a coffee setup beckoned with rows of thick cake slices, brownies and cookies on small plates.

2010-03-10 FOOD Quick recipes for jam sponge and soda bread

The best food for me is from the family table. No better time then to think about a couple of homely dishes that you can enjoy around the table with family or friends. So, lets keep it homely. Here are two winner recipes, both of which are quick and easy.

There can be an awful lot of baloney and snobbish nonsense talked nowadays about food and wine. My advice If people start being snobbish about it, gently turn away and let the wind take away their words and thoughts. Let them off. Keep it real, keep it simple.

While you can always find my searching through tons of food blogs on the Internet and leafing through my many cookbooks, theres nothing I love so much as a food magazine. Every month they arrive in my mailbox with full-color photos (some of them) and fun articles and recipe after recipe. But with so many food magazines out there, how do you choose which to subscribe to

Its by Martha Stewart so you know its good. But its like Martha Stewart on training wheels. Which means absolutely anyone can make the recipes in this magazine. Most of them have small ingredient lists and ingredients that can be easily found and bought. Plus, the magazine is a super manageable size, so you can even throw it in your bag and bring it to the grocery store with you.

2010-02-24 When the Kitchen Knives Come Out

Doug McGrath can tell you all about them. He worked as a short-order cook in high school and still prepares food by memory, often throwing in a dash of salt or a splash of oil to taste. His wife, Tina, by contrast, prefers to follow recipes meticulously.

Take the McGraths and their mashed potatoes. They admit their kitchen spats have more to do with power struggles than food. "I am a grown man and dont need a mother to tell me how to do something right," says Mr. McGrath. (Ms. McGrath, 53, says she and her husband cannot even be in the kitchen together when one of them is cooking: "Neither of us is open to saying we want to be corrected. ")

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the homea place where family bonds are strengthened and memories are created. But it can also be a seething cauldron of power plays, resentment and passive-aggressive behavior.
