2007-11-26 Starbucks Warms Up to Idea of Advertising-Advertising Age-News

TV is) truly just one of many media were using," said spokeswoman Tricia Moriarty. "This is by no means the primary driver, but its one of the mix. " Ms. Moriarty said the TV will include cable spots on networks such as CNN and the Food Network along with pricey prime-time spots, including several during ABCs "Greys Anatomy" and CBSs "CSI: Miami. "

The best way to improve store numbers, according to Seth Godin, author of "Small is the New Big," is boosting sales of food, music and novelty items, but he said thats unlikely. "(Starbucks founder) Howard Schultz already did it once with the idea that expensive coffee could be an adult treat," he said. "Its unlikely that lightning will strike twice, but they have to try. "

On this recent weekday, Gratz was nearly finished with her creations, two 15-second spots. The commercials started airing on the Food Network on Saturday, pegged to the holiday cooking season, a spice-rich environment if ever there was one.

For the real shoot, food stylists came in to spiff up a bird, which Gratz then used as the model for her animation. It looked delicious, but looks can be deceptive, says Gratz, who has a dry, mischievous sense of humor. "Everything is for show, to make it photograph well. So they put spray matte varnish on it. It does seem to be a bit odd, however, that Food Network has been letting go some of its biggest stars. My question is thiswhat are they going to put on in place of this show More Rachael Ray God forbid they should give Paula Deen more airtime. I could go the rest of my life without hearing her screechy voiceand Id die a happy woman. Are shows like thoseseriously what people want to see Do people really take their cooking tips from Rachael and Paula Gah, no wonder you cant get a decent meal any more.
