2010-08-23 Avoid using unsafe canning methods and practices - Home and Garden - The Times-Tribune

Some people have had "good luck" by not adequately processing food. One popular unsafe food preservation method is the open-kettle method. This involves placing hot food in jars and sealing with no further heat treatment. This method is NOT recommended for home canning of any food because it seldom sterilizes food. Without sufficient heat to destroy bacteria and sterilize the food, the product may spoil. Foods ferment when open-kettle canning does not destroy yeasts, or permits them to enter the jar before it is sealed. Simply getting lids to seal on jars will not prevent food from spoiling.

2010-08-21 Bangor, ME Dozens speak in favor of BPA ban

Animal studies have shown that BPA can disrupt hormone systems and has been linked to cancer and other diseases. Environmental regulators will decide whether to ban the use of BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups, water bottle, thermoses and other reusable food and beverage containers. But environmental activists say the state needs to get rid of canned infant formula and baby food jars.

The metal can lining and food jar lids are coasted with a resin that leaches BPA into food," said Michael Belliveau, the Executive Director of the Environmental Health Strategy Center.

2010-07-24 Isabel Cowles: Big Advancements for Little Environmentalists: Two Great Products for Eco-Babies

In this world of carbon counting, it turns out that the smallest feet can have the biggest footprint. The thought dawned on me recently as I watched a friend wrap up her childs used diaper and place it in a trashcan, already half-filled with shiny, plastic lumps. Her sink brimmed with miniature glass jars shed washed and planned to recycle. I thought about how much waste a single meal had made: the most basic elements of a babys life--food and poop--are generating billions of units of waste each year.

2010-07-11 Sweet taste of summer - Winnipeg Free Press

My grandmother used wax to seal the jars -- the jars being empty baby food jars, just small enough for something so precious.

This recipe is courtesy of Wayne Sych, former sous-chef and most recently, the executive chef at The Cannery Seafood Restaurant.

Place ricotta, orange zest and liqueur in food processor and pulse until combined. Whip the cream and icing sugar to the firm peak stage. Fold the whipped cream into the ricotta mixture.

My best childhood strawberry memory is the wild strawberry jam that my grandmother made. Because wild strawberries were so tedious to pick, very few jars were made every year.

2010-07-09 Heinz Australia vows bisphenol A phase out in baby food packaging

Consumer concerns are increasingly driving action to eliminate use of the chemical in food packaging. Last week, the Australian Government said it had brokered a voluntary agreement with a host of major retailers to stop using BPA in food contact materials aimed at young children. The Government stressed it was responding to consumer anxiety and that it still believed current exposure to BPA from food packaging was safe.

BPA is used as a monomer in the production of polycarbonate baby bottles, water bottles, some processing equipment, water pipes and the epoxy linings of food cans. While major food safety agencies across the world deem it safe, there is mounting scientific evidence that exposure to the chemical at low levels may be linked to a range of serious health problems.

2010-04-06 Use of glass items in colonial Madras

For unexplained reasons, the glass industry did not flourish in Madras in later times. Bulk of industrial glass in India in the early 1900s consisted of oillamp chimneys, food jars and stopperbottles for medical use. Cheap blown and pressed tumblers followed the order: chimneys, food jars, and stopper bottles; Codd bottles are somewhere far down in this list. No glass product made in India was of great finesse and prize-worthy, but they, of course, met societal needs.

2010-03-12 AT BRANDON NEWTON ART STUDIO, ARTIST ADAM DESIO GIVES OLD ART A NEW TWIST

On March 4, he began a display of his new art collection: clear canned food jars, filled with those old materials, at the Brandon Newton Art Studio and Gallery in downtown Fredericksburg.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and Andy Warhol has always been one of my influences," DeSio said, relating his art-filled canned food jars to Warhols artwork featuring a soup can.

DeSio isnt selling the jars themselves. However, he is also a photographer, and has taken fine art images of the jars--giving them yet another artistic dimension--which he will sell.
