2010-03-12 WinterLights Celebrations program gives high marks to Town of Carleton Place - News - By EMC News Almonte/Carleton Place Local Community News

Carleton Place is an attractive and historic town within commuting distance from Ottawa. In addition to the new housing developments and the box stores on the edge of town, it has long established businesses and services in the beautiful town centre. There are schools, shops, and recreation and cultural facilities to meet all the needs of a busy community. The residents of Carleton Place have a history of looking after each other and the tradition continues with a variety of projects and programs that aid the less fortunate at Christmas and throughout the year. At Christmas, churches, service clubs, businesses, institutions and individuals cooperate to provide food hampers and gifts, prepare special Christmas dinners, collect mitts on a mitten tree, and fill hundreds of shoe boxes for the overseas Samaritans Purse Campaign. 2010-03-11 Food policy for Canada - The Daily Observer - Ontario, CA

A few years ago I was at a government consultation meeting around the future of agriculture. I was there representing the National Farmers Union and the thousands of farmers across Canada who have been talking and working on promoting the need for a national food policy and agricultural policies that actually focus on the needs and importance of family farmers. During the meeting I brought up the idea of a national food policy.

I was reminded of this recently when I received a glossy promotional magazine in my mail for one of Ontarios farm organizations that discussed amongst other things a national food policy like they had invented the idea.

2010-03-06 North West Evening Mail News Ulverston Emergency food aid for flood victims

ULVERSTONS St John Ambulance unit donated two food hampers to flood victims in the town.

The voluntary first-aid team raised the money to fill the hampers by having a collection at Christmas instead of sending cards to each other.

So we put the hampers in the flood centre and just hoped they would be useful for them to help themselves to. We are always here to give a hand to anybody in the community, not just as first-aiders.

2010-02-28 The Payson Roundup / Weather continues to hamper driving in high country

The elk population is at a lower elevation due to the snow levels being higher as you get closer to the Mogollon Rim. The snow cover that is deep hampers their ability to find food. If there was a short-term storm, of a week or less; they would remain in their normal areas. Traveling by car to lower elevations at this time, elk can often be seen next to roads and highways grazing in areas they are not normally seen.

Japan Deflation Persists as Consumer Prices Fall 1. 3 pct. (Update2)

Price declines have eased since peaking at 2. 4 percent last August, largely because of costlier crude oil. Excluding energy and food, prices slumped 1. 2 percent in January from a year earlier, matching the previous month and rsquo;s decline as the sharpest since records began in 1971.

(Bloomberg) -- Japan and rsquo;s consumer prices fell for an 11th month in January, putting renewed pressure on policy makers to eradicate deflation that hampers the recovery.

2010-02-26 Nutrition: Initiative to promote food security National news The Phnom Penh Post - Cambodias Newspaper of Record

He Council for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) on Wednesday launched a new scheme aimed at improving nutrition levels and ensuring the consistent availability of food for families throughout the Kingdom. In the past, Cambodia has been largely food self-sufficient and could produce surpluses for export. However, there continue to be regional disparities, and local food availability remains vulnerable to natural disasters, while rural poverty still hampers access to adequate food for many households, Tao Seng Huor, vice chairman of CARD, said at the launch of the National Trainer Pool for Food Security and Nutrition. To combat the limited amount of awareness of food security and nutrition issues, the scheme, a joint venture between CARD and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, will train people to assist
