2010-09-02 Calorie counts to appear in trains, planes, groceries and theaters

The law covers food vendors that sell food for immediate consumption, even if not eaten on-site. However, not every food provider is covered by the law; it only pertains to corporate entities with 20 or more locations, including franchisees. The one-man pretzel stand would be exempt, unless he owns a franchise of a chain.

That cover more than just traditional restaurants. You will soon see calorie information listed on the menus at movie theaters, airlines, trains, grocery store food courts, convenience stores and even hot dog stands.

2010-08-30 Grocery rebirth in heart of the city

A Harvest Foods store on Cantrell Road and another on Rodney Parham Road were closed as part of Affiliated Foods bankruptcy and closure in 2009. They were taken over by Cranfords Fresh World, but closed last summer after Affiliateds bankruptcy proceedings also caused that deal to fall through.

In recent years, the Little Rock grocery landscape has been marked by closures, but in the next two months there will be a renaissance in the residential heart of the city - four groceries are opening or reopening.

2010-08-26 Would Assembly members grocery tax unfairly target the poor - My News 4 - KRNV, Reno, NV

Reno, NV - State Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea wants voters to decide if they should pay a sales tax on groceries. Goicoechea announced Monday on Nevada Newsmakers that he wants to put a grocery tax question on a ballot.

If youre lower income and eligible for food stamps, youre not going to have the impact of sales tax on food," Vilardo said.

She also points out that a grocery tax would help stabilize Nevadas tax base, because people have to buy food.

2010-08-24 Anniston Star - Business As Usual Food for thought If you can find it

This is a term used to describe an area where a population does not have easy access to healthy food. There may be food choices there, including fast food and convenience stores, but they arent seen as providing fresh foods or a variety.

Our food-access situation, however, could be better. Cast a look around and youll notice that food stores with a wide range of products, including fresh vegetables, arent located around every corner. In many cities they are clustered, and in most places they tend not to be located in lower-income neighborhoods.

2010-08-23 Food stamp stampede

Crooks isnt alone. More Montana citizens receive federal assistance to pay for their groceries than ever before. Some use the help to feed their children. Many are on a fixed income due to a disability. Others, like Crooks, work but dont earn enough to buy basic necessities, so they use food stamps to bridge the gap.

Alise and Ben Sanchez struggle to make ends meet on Alises take-home pay, which is about usd. 800 a month. Alise, too, is a Vista working with Children and Family Services, and Ben has been laid off, although is expecting to return to work next week. This is the second time theyve received food stamp benefits. The first time was in 2008 in Portland, Ore. , after they graduated from college.

2010-08-19 The Day - Trader Joes: Youre Invited to this Grocery Wasteland News from southeastern Connecticut

The idea the store might be coming gained some more ground when Stonington First Selectman Ed Haberek was quoted in a recent news story - one in which he reported complaining to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal about Stop and Shops refusal to sublet its former space in Pawcatuck to any food stores - as saying that Trader Joes and stores like it have been denied a chance to move in.

Haberek told me this week, though, that his reference to Trader Joes was just that, a generic reference to the kind of small specialty food retailer that he says Stop and Shop is refusing to rent to. The first selectman did say he spoke to some Trader Joes representatives recently at a Boston trade show, but no one from the company that he knows of has looked at the Pawcatuck location.
