2010-03-11 At Passover, finding a kosher path out of Egypt JTA - Jewish and Israel News

It starts with no bread. What does it mean At the restaurant, coffee shop or party, you turn it down. And then you also forego other foodstuffs containing leaven. Even those who don and rsquo;t usually pay much attention to this can become obsessed for a week with the holiday search for substitution.

That and rsquo;s why after eight days, two seders and a book full of blessings, I was on the exodus road, leaving behind the world of unkosher steaks and BBQ and brochettes. Once on the road, I found these objects in the mirror do appear closer than they appear. Even in the Bible, the children of Israel recall longingly the leeks and onions and yes, the meat of Egypt.

2010-03-07 We Must No Longer Ignore the Cruelty of Our Eating (Opinion)

NaturalNews) The more forcefully we ignore something, the more power it has over us and the more strongly it influences us. Taking a clear look at the foods produced by modern methods and what we have been conditioned to accept, we find misery, cruelty and exploitation. Therefore, we avoid looking deeply at our food, if of animal origin, and continue floating in that big river in Egypt (the Nile). This practice of avoidance and denial, applied to eating, carries over automatically into our entire private and public life. We know, deep down, that we cannot look deeply anywhere. If we do, we will have to look deeply into the enormous suffering our food choices directly cause.

2010-03-05 The cemeterys lesson in coexistence Commentary Minnesota Public Radio NewsQ

Before the Wahhabi-oil brand of Islam that is sweeping Egypt these days, there was more tolerance. Nowadays Egyptian Muslims and Copts alike are expressing their frustration with their lives by using religious symbols and formalities; even the Egyptian soccer team (all Muslims) are known for their trademark way of celebrating a goal: They kneel down for a group prayer, thankful for every score and victory.

But Egyptian Coptics have the same life expectancy as Egyptian Muslims, and the father suddenly died. The family was not prepared, and neither was the rest of the village. Although the cultural tradition of the Muslim villagers accommodated the Christian family while they were alive, the burial traditions were not flexible enough to accommodate the mixing of their dead in the cemetery.

Whether in Egypt or America, theres a place where religious and cultural differences neednt matter so much.

Havent tried any others, b/c after discovering Rumis I find no need to. I am almost reluctant to mention its location for fear that Marvin of Macon (see best of Vietnamese vote)might want to nuke it, simply based on the fact that it is of Mideastern origin. Hey Marv, hows the American cuisine scene in Macon, tried Wendys bacon-blue burger yet
