The Community Lighthouse takes donated items and sells them in their resale shop to help provide services for those in need in the community. One of their primary operations is the food bank, tucked in the back of the new facility. Through donations, the money they make at the resale shop and buying from discount food stores, they provide hundreds of families (347 in June) with food each month.

Teresa Mizgala, president of the food pantry board and trustee for the village, said the project is still in a research phase.

For this project, the President has thus far released P13. 25 billion in FIELDS funds for this year alone. Of this amount: P1. 3 billion was earmarked for fertilizer assistance and subsidies, P3. 15 billion for the repair and restoration of irrigation facilities, P1. 5 billion in loans to farmers (May to , P694. 74 million for extension services, P1. 07 billion for flatbed dryers, P4 billion for farm-to-market roads and P1. 54 billion for seeds.

This year alone, thanks to the much-maligned E-VAT, the President released P13. 25 billion for her Fertilizer, Irrigation, Education and extension work, Loans, Dryers and other post-harvest facilities and Seeds (FIELDS) program. She launched this program at the National Food Summit last April 4 to perk up farm productivity and help cushion the impact of the global food crisis.

The international food crisis has stirred enough political unrest to topple Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis of Haiti. It has also triggered food riots or rocked governments in Egypt, Mexico, Yemen, Morocco, Guinea, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Niger, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The crisis in the Philippines is not as severe and the public reaction, less vehement, thanks mainly to the controversial expanded value-added tax (E-VAT) that has ensured ample funding for the governments agricultural programs.
