News on Food Cookies News 2008052008-05-08 East Bay Express Arts and Culture Munchies After MidnightDylan Fiesel is a wiry 22-year-old who wears fleece-lined sweatshirts and keeps his hair cut short. He has the look of a first-year law student and the unhurried drawl of someone who clocks six hours of sleep a night. Fiesel could have been a short order cook, had he not gone the businessmans route. A North Bay native, he relocated to Berkeley after graduating from the film and entrepreneurship programs at Indiana University, and now spends most days studying for the GMAT. Most nights hes up baking cookies in Emeryvilles Co-Op Kitchens, a large industrial building where roughly twenty to thirty local mom-and-pops do their food preparation and cooking. There, Fiesel runs Mrs. Munchies, a late-night cookie delivery enterprise thats likely the only one of its kind in the East Bay. 2008-05-19 Pearl Roberts Award The Marion StarTupps said that in 1987, there were five families in the church who were out of work and in need of help. In , Mary and her friend, Geneva Branch (affectionately known as "Jeep") started the Kirkpatrick Church of Christ Food Pantry. In 1987, their son, Richard Rowe, owned the "old store" in Kirkpatrick and the food pantry was there for 15 years. Then they outgrew the area they were occupying and moved down the road to a building on the Rowes property. Tom, along with many members of the church, helped to remodel the old building, built many shelves and put in a cement floor. There have also been many additions to the food pantries needed to keep food cold, such as a walk-in freezer that Bob Evans in Mansfield donated when they moved to a new facility. After Jeeps death in 2005, Mary continued to serve. 2008-05-29 Families struggling as bills begin to bite Environment The GuardianIt is certainly a challenge to get the products which people expect to be on the shelves at the right price," says Andrew Opie, food policy director at the British Retail Consortium, which represents leading British supermarket chains. "Some problems, when it comes to commodity prices, are out of their hands, though the retailers have tried to prepare by having a flexible food chain, negotiating with suppliers. They see themselves as trying to absorb costs to insulate consumers from the worst vagaries of the harvests, while at the same time taking advantage of products where there is good availability, such as fruit and vegetables, or sugar, some meat prices, and get those promoted as an alternative. We are seeing more promotions than ever, and these tend to be geared towards straightforward reductions in price, rather than bogofs For many people in Britain, price rises across a range of food staples are starting to hurt - Food Household bills Climate change Consumer affairs Supermarkets Oil and gas industry Business Environment Money UK news World news Environment
2008-05-08 Genetic News (BioValley Portal)Until now, food producers have used unmodified corn as key ingredients to make starch and starch sugar, which are used to create the sweet flavors in cookies and soft drinks. But from now on, they are going to use GMO corn. As a result, supermarket shelves will be piled high with products such as cookies, bread, soft drinks and ice cream that contain primary ingredients made from GMO crops, which are still controversial for their safety. www.checkbiotech.org - Rare diseases;biotech;orphan drugs;medicine;checkbiotech;rare disorders;rare genetice disorders;orphan diseases;orphan disorders;pharmaceutical;biotechnology;biofuels;basel;novartis;roche;genetically
2008-05-03 Senior Times MagazineWhen the food bank outgrew its old location, Anne needed a place to store some of the food while they looked for a new location. She came across a building for sale, and although she could not buy the building, Anne decided to call the owner to see if she could store some food there until the building was sold. She said she could not believe that not only was she about to ask the owner if she could store things in his building, but also she did not have the money to pay him. But Anne blurted out her request over the telephone then sat quietly and waited for a reply. The man told her that because he was a Christian he felt it was his job to help her. 2008-05-31 Increased Food and Fuel Prices Costing Schools Millions - KCPWGranite School District has 177 buses, a fleet of maintenance vehicles, and 120 driver education cars. Fuel costs have more than doubled in a 7-year period. To balance the budget, the district will charge its schools more money for field trips. Given says this will force schools to cut back on field trips or ask parents to make up the difference. Meanwhile food prices are also impacting school budgets. The cost of flour has tripled, and with 33,000 students to feed Monday through Friday, even a penny or two adds up to a big chunk of change, says Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams. The district wont have to increase prices - yet, he says. However, Davis is cutting back in other areas to balance the food budget. www.kcpw.org
2008-05-07 Orlans Online Local NewsJust like as in years past, the food drive culminated on Thursday morning with the students marching from the Charlemagne Boulevard school to the food bank located in the Taylor Creek Business Park located three kilometres away, carrying one or two items each. The rest of the food was delivered by school bus and a small convoy of students who used their own vehicles to transport whatever they could. In the past the food items collected were donated to the Orl and eacute;ans-Cumberland Community Resource Centres emergency food program. This year, due to the sheer volume of items collected, both the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard and the Ottawa South emergency food program will benefit as well. 2008-05-28 Ask Dr. Weil: School food is changing for the betterQ Its become a daily battle to get my kid to eat healthy foods at home because the school cafeteria serves up french fries, giant pretzels, cookies and ice cream. My bagged lunch simply cannot compete. I really dont feel that kids should be eating this type of food every day, and I feel powerless to change things. Any ideas A I understand your frustration, but I think that things are changing for the better, thanks in part to the high-profile efforts of chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, Calif. , celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in England and determined parents everywhere. You may have read about Alice Waters efforts to educate children about food through her Edible Schoolyard program launched more than 10 years ago. The kids plant gardens and eat the harvests, learning about healthy nutrition in the process. The program has been an outstanding success and has inspired similar programs elsewhere in California and Ohio. www.azstarnet.com
