2009-08-29 At the Show: Cookies for people with food allergies by Dr Lucys (NASFT 2009)

Her home-baked cookies consistently earned rave reviews from both family and friends. They repeatedly said her cookies were much better than those available in stores. So, Dr. Lucy decided to start a food manufacturing business. Her dream was to share her great products with other consumers looking for allergy appropriate food alternatives. With safety and purity in mind, Dr. Lucy knew she could not begin producing her products in a home kitchen or through a "co-packer" as many start-up food-marketers do. Instead, she and her husband, who is her business partner, put their personal resources on the line to finance the build-out of a brand new dedicated factory. Thus, Dr. Lucy found herself the marketer and manufacturer of specialty food products.

2009-07-17 Consumers Poised to Purchase Prepared Foods at C-stores

One-third of consumers (31. 9 percent) said they purchased prepared food while at a c-store to buy other items. However, it is instructive that another third of respondents said the biggest influence on their decision to purchase prepared food at a c-store was that the food looked fresh (20. 3 percent) or smelled good (11. 7 percent). Only 20 percent, or one-fifth of households, cited price as the main influence on their decision to buy. This may indicate one of two factors: c-stores have some price elasticity when it comes to prepared foods, as long as the quality is top-notch; and, in many cases, prepared foods at a c-store are already perceived by many consumers to be a relatively less expensive compared with fast-food and casual restaurants. The lesson for retailers appears to be: If you want to sell prepared food, it must look

2009-05-05 Healthy School Food for Kids - Q and A - Dr. Norris Chumley Satisfied Life

At our kids school the typical menu is fried chicken, French fries (or some other potato) and sometimes salad. Peanut butter and jelly is available every day. Dessert is served every day. The kids are not allowed to bring their own food. Our entire family is vegetarian. We talked to the school about this issue and their solution was to have the kids eat salad and/or peanut butter and jelly every day. After lunch they are welcome to go to the bookstore and buy cookies and crackers to fill up on. It is hard to even believe that I am having this issue. Any thoughts or suggestions

2009-06-20 As American as General Tsos Chicken

Despite these changes, Thai food in the United States is typically more authentic than American Chinese food. Other ethnic foods have not changed as significantly as Chinese food. Alice Pak, a senior journalism and politics major at Ithaca College, is the daughter of two Korean immigrants. She has noticed that Korean restaurants are typically more authentic than their Chinese counterparts. I think the media has something to do with it, Pak said. You see people at home, the cute girls, having takeout Chinese in their boxes. You dont do that with Korean food.

2009-04-30 Girl Scouts celebrate World Thinking Day and successful cookie sale

These cookies are sold and collected by Girl Scouts troops as part of the Gift of Caring/Hometown Heroes program. For this program troops choose heroes in their community, such as non-profit organizations, uniformed personnel, the military, nursing/senior citizen homes or a local food bank. Girls also learn about the individual work of these organizations by taking a tour, learning about their jobs/careers and helping with service projects. In addition to Operation Sweet Tooth donations, a few troops have saved either some or all of theirs boxes to be donated to other local Hometown Heroes of their choice.
