2010-03-11 Local: In The Mission : Food Cart Hearing: Dufty Promises New Regulations by May

The vendors came across as slightly more dour, and anxious, than their proposed regulators. Among the suggestions posed by the vendors: allow smaller vendors to pool together and apply for a single permit for street festivals, take into account event duration when handing out permits ("We dont need on-site heating, refrigeration, or bathrooms for a two-hour event," one vendor said. "Trust me. We use the bathroom before the event starts") to relax the regulation forbidding a food cart from being located within 1500 feet of a school for carts that sell healthy food, and to build a centralized commissary that would provide the cleaning and refrigerated storage facilities required for licensed food carts.

2010-03-06 Calling all idiots: Grab a shopping cart for a good cause

St. Louis may not boast Alaskan sled dogs or frozen tundra, but we do have some idiots. The Downtown St. Louis Partnership today debuts its version of the Iditarod: the Idiotarod, in which teams race grocery carts through downtown to raise money for Operation Food Search. We spoke with organizer Maggie Campbell about the event.

Each team has five people four "dogs" to pull and someone to mush. No whips allowed. They go to five locations (City Museum, Mike Shannons Steaks and Seafood, Flamingo Bowl, El Borracho and Hard Rock Cafe). The teams will do a little entertainment when they stop tell some jokes or do a dance.

Comments against the carts were forwarded to council members from the owners of businesses like the Big Wrap, Kenichi, Johnny McGuires and Pacifica. Neighbors in the Koch Lumber Park area, where one of the carts was to be placed, also wrote with worries about trash. Transit officials who run the bus stop at Rubey Park, where another cart was slated, voiced concern that late-night food there would intensify the sloppiness of intoxicated individuals behaving belligerently and often sick and vomiting around Rubey and on the buses.

2010-03-01 NeSmith: Giving spirit truly radiates in Rabun Co.

Now theres talk of greater efficiencies of distribution by building or buying a warehouse in Rabun County for the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Put more money in food and less into transportation. These unselfish volunteers want to make every dollar count. Our government should pay attention to what can be accomplished when it doesnt matter who gets the credit.

An added benefit of the volunteers going inside the homes to deliver the food is that they see other needs. Houses are in disrepair. Families are huddling without power and heat. Notes are made and passed to another group that volunteers handyman services. Businesses are donating heaters, freezers to store food and supplies to keep the momentum rolling.

2010-02-28 Editorial: Weekly trash pickup is progress, not cause for panic News for Dallas, Texas Dallas Morning News Opinion: Editorials

Amazingly, plenty of Dallas residents either dont know or dont care that the city will deliver a big, blue bin for recycling to their houses. Recycling indifference is particularly pervasive in many southern Dallas neighborhoods. In multiple southern City Council districts, less than 30 percent of households have requested blue carts.

Go about your normal day read the mail, order some takeout, enjoy a soda then practice the recycling opportunities those activities offer. Throw your discarded paper, aluminum and even clear food containers into your new blue bin.

2010-02-25 Food Vendors Protest New Unattended Cart Rule

As of January 1, city officials are allowed to seize the permits of vendors who leave their food carts unattended.

In a statement, the DOH said the rules dont prevent vendors from taking short breaks, but food does need to be secured before leaving to prevent health hazards.

Supporters of the law say leaving carts unattended, even for a few minutes, can be a public safety hazard.

2010-02-24 City Goes Nuts Over Unattended Food Carts NBC New York

New laws enacted on Jan. 1 forbid street vendors from abandoning their carts even for a moment out of concern the food could be contaminated. And health inspectors have been cracking down on vendors in the last two months to ensure they know the rules.

Amid a ticketing blitz aimed at curbing the number of unattended food carts throughout the city, health inspectors could care less about the callings of Mother Nature.

While industry advocates like Basinski slam city inspectors for creating "rules to harass small-business owners," health officials argue maintaining a constant, watchful eye on street vendor carts is a crucial component of consumer safety.

2010-02-22 Aspiring hot-dog-cart entrepreneurs learn the science of steaming a bun at Vienna Beefs Hot Dog University Crains Chicago Business

With unemployment near 10 pct. , I think there will be a lot of people who will consider this that wouldnt otherwise," says Darren Tristano, an executive vice-president at food industry consultant Technomic Inc. "Hot Dog University is a pretty interesting concept, and the challenge will be to get to people throughout the country that arent familiar with Vienna. "

Mr. Reitman, a 62-year-old hot dog lover who grew up on Chicagos West Side, started teaching people how to operate carts four years ago in Milwaukee and joined Vienna as its "professor of hot dogs" in 2009.
