2010-09-03 Salvation Army running out of food

The pantry is at the Salvation Army, 345 Columbus St. S. E. , across the street from Waverly School. Its open from 9 to 11:45 a. m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday if the food boxes hold out that long.

A Salvation Army food box contains enough ingredients to make meals for three to five days, depending on the size of the household.

After running out last Wednesday, the organization got a shipment from the Linn-Benton Food Bank on Thursday, so there was some to distribute on Friday and Monday. And Bacon expects some will be left to be handed out today.

2010-08-31 Longview News-Journal: Local News - Ministry plans Too Hot To Cook

The event is usually scheduled during the first or second week of school, because thats often a time when people need a break as they adjust to more hectic fall schedules after the lazy days of summer, she said. Volunteers and staff from Longview Community Ministries will be on hand to greet diners from 5 to 7 p. m. , although proceeds from the entire evening will benefit the Food Box.

The nonprofit agency is teaming up with 11 local restaurants for its annual Too Hot To Cook fundraiser. Restaurants donate a percentage of their profits for the evening and proceeds will benefit the Food Box, which provides grocery staples to Longview families experiencing economic hardship, said program manager Hope Elliott.

2010-08-30 Ask Tom

Ive noticed the practice, too. Some restaurants think that letting diners transfer uneaten food from plate to box is in the patrons interest, because it allows the customer to take exactly what he wants, and the food never leaves his sight. Im of the mind that servers are better equipped to wrap up leftovers: They have aprons to protect their clothes from stains, for instance, and the utensils to do the job right. Plus, one of the pleasures of eating away from home is having someone else do the work.

More and more," someone wrote in a recent online food discussion, "Im noticing that when I ask to take home my leftovers, they bring the carton for me to load" instead of packing up the remains behind the scenes. "I dont particularly care that much, but I notice that this is a trend, even in some.

2010-08-29 Churches in California and Arizona help start-up firm distribute discounted food

Once a month, 20 trucks hired by the company deliver discount boxes of frozen food for distribution to people who have paid for them in advance. More than 90 percent of the host sites are churches looking to supplement their traditional food-giveaway programs.

Good Source Solutions, the parent company of Treasure Box, has for decades been in the business of selling wholesale food to nonprofit groups and institutional buyers such as schools and jails. But persuading churches to participate is different, said Treasure Box Executive Director Steve Guy.

2010-08-25 Giving is bountiful for Preble Street food pantry Portland, Maine The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

The food pantry program, now in its second year, began when special boxes and shelving were delivered to 22 companies in the Portland area last December. Participating companies, including Unum, TD Bank and MaineHealth, encouraged their employees to donate. The drive ended in June.

The two organizations more than doubled their expected contributions, receiving 860 boxes of food instead of an anticipated 400 boxes, with each box supplying about 27 meals.

The need seems to be on the rise and increasing steadily," said John Shoos, senior vice president for community development at United Way. "We want to raise awareness. We also need to look at long-term issues that will help people address food insecurity over the long haul. "

2010-08-24 Area campgrounds see upgrades, tree cutting

A group of campers from New Mexico stuffs their food inside a bear box, or food storage locker, at Difficult Campground near Aspen on Friday. Matthew Peralta loads the box while, from left, Ian Jackson, Jessica Estrada and Mia Peralta watch.

New this year at Avalanche Campground are bear boxes containers where campers can secure their food so bears cant get at it. One box has been installed at each campsite.

The goal of the bear boxes is to keep food secure and prevent trouble in the first place. Locking up food in a vehicle isnt always effective, Oliver said.
