2010-09-03 Genetically altered fish on the table in the U. S.

But consumer advocates and food safety experts are worried that splicing and dicing fish genes may have the opposite effect, leading to more industrial farming and potential escapes into the wild. Side effects from eating such fish are also unknown, with little data to show it is safe, they say.

U. S. health officials are set to rule on whether a faster-growing, genetically engineered fish is safe to eat in a decision that could deliver the first altered animal food to consumers dinner plates.

2010-09-02 How I Learned to Love Farmed Salmon - TIME

Theres nothing wrong with modifying food to make it easier for us to grow. There are no black Angus cows grazing in the wild; theyre the product of breeding for size, marbling and fast growth, not unlike the genetically modified salmon. If a farmed fish is bad for people, it needs to be banned until the problem is solved; but farming fish, in and of itself, is something that needs to be worked out and soon. Eating the so-called "Frankenfish," however scary it may sound, is a small price to pay for saving the world. And who knows Some day it might even taste as good as its wild cousins.

2010-08-31 Imported Seafood May Be Riskier Than Gulf Seafood Post-Oil Spill

What should happen is that the importing company and its corporate officers should have to guaranty the health and safety of the imported product. Those companies and their officers that violate this should be prosecuted and sent to jail, prohibiting them from working in any capacity in the import business. The burden of proof should be on the importing company that they did due diligence to ensure that the food was grown/raised according to US standards or it cannot be allowed into the country. If we establish standards for anything, the imported product should have to meet or exceed those standards. If companies form a particular country continually violate this policy, that country should have all of its products delayed at the port until they can be checked for health and safety. If we cannot stop American corporations from

B. C. sockeye salmon bounty estimate upped to 30 million

Water temperature, which affects the supply of food, seems particularly important. In turn, climate change is thought to be responsible for those temperature fluctuations. Separately, a cyclical variation in the Pacific Ocean climate called the decadal oscillation could be at work, which may warm water for years. A shift was detected in 2008, with water cooling, just this year and rsquo;s returning sockeye where heading out to the ocean. 2010-08-24 Black bear problems high this summer in Douglas County The News-Review

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife suggests homeowners prevent bear encounters by storing pet food inside, hanging bird feeders out of reach, cleaning barbecue grills, picking up fallen fruit, and keeping garbage inside or pouring bleach over the trash if left outside.

The lack of their natural food source means bears are coming out of the forest to find a meal tipping over garbage cans, eating dog food, killing livestock and even expecting handouts from humans.

2010-08-23 Roger Federer of old returns to end trophy drought at Cincinnati Masters Sport The Guardian

The wild card Fish hit 17 aces to take his weeks tally to 87, a tournament record, and jumped 15 places to No21 in the world. He is, at last, a big Fish in a big pond. But time, in every way, was not on his side here. The final was Fishs 14th hour on court this week, Federers sixth (after two walkovers and two undemanding wins). The American looked fresh in the third set but raggedness bedevilled him. The professionalism of Federer as he closed on the 63rd win of his career was something to behold. Even under the most severe pressure, he manages to find the magic.
