2009-06-08 Chronicle held up a mirror to the city

The Chronicle opposed generations of civic crooks, from Chris Buckley, a blind political fixer who stole the city blind, to sandlot orators who wanted to hang the rich and drive the Chinese from America. It opposed boss Abe Ruef and his machine and smaller crooked politicians up to the present day.

Sandlot riots under leadership of Denis Kearney, who organized mobs that attacked the Chinese. The Chronicle called him "a political mad dog. "

2009-06-07 Food and wine What to drink with hamburgers, plus a recipe for The Great Burger Seattle Times Newspaper

John Torode, author of the recent cookbook "Beef and other Bovine Matters," has several tips for turning out the perfect moist burger, even when cooked to well done. Instead of salt, he seasons the beef with Chinese oyster sauce. He says salt dries the meat. He also refrigerates the burger mixture before grilling, which he says helps the burgers stay moist and bind together during cooking.

From fast food joints with uniform patties to fancy burger bars offering gourmet toppings, the hamburger has a certain nostalgia.

2009-06-04 Chinese food has been out of fashion - Peoples Daily Online

One of our readers sent us a letter saying that a magazine survey showed that 90 pct. of the people being asked think that Chinese dishes are the most delicious in the world. Indeed, Chinese food culture has a long history and tradition. Eating is not just a way of filling the stomach, but also an art and a culture.

The list does not contain any restaurant in the greater China region, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Is it true that Chinese food is really not up to standard

2009-06-03 China anger with North Korea echoes in the press Reuters

Apart from the condemnation of the test, Chinese Foreign Ministry officials have avoided strong commentary about North Korea, which depends on its 1950-53 Korean War ally China for much of its food and oil.

North Koreas second nuclear test took place 85 km (53 miles) from Chinas border, and the tremors from the blast forced many schools on the Chinese side to evacuate, wrote Zhang Lianggui, a prominent Chinese expert on the North.

Zhan Debin, an expert on Korea at Fudan University in Shanghai, wrote in the paper that the Chinese government could soon be pushed to abandon its usual reticence.

2009-06-02 A parting word about Chinese food - Opinion

As I near the end of my time at Ohio State, I have started pondering my legacy. I think its natural for most seniors to have this innate desire to pass on advice and secrets to the younger legions of Buckeye Nation. But while many would choose to preach the necessity of getting the most out of your four (or six) years at OSU by joining student groups or traveling abroad, I want to pass on one particular tidbit about something just as important: good Chinese food.

2009-06-01 Britain hopeful on U. N. action over North Korea U. S. Reuters

On Saturday, a top Chinese army official called on North Korea to move to denuclearization and asked all regional parties to stay calm. But he did not mention sanctions. China exports food and energy supplies to neighboring North Korea.

Taylor said the Chinese concern voiced at the forum made her hopeful the U. N. resolution would bring "some concerted action. " "It is that unity of action that I think is important here. Because if we only can get the unity of action, the regime in North Korea will understand the strength of feeling and will begin to take notice," she said.

2009-05-31 GM exports would be step up for Chinese automakers Business

News media reports that GM intends to increase sales of vehicles made outside the U. S. , for the first time importing autos made at its Chinese factories with partner SAIC Motor Corp. , spell political trouble given GM and rsquo;s reliance on billions of dollars in U. S. government support.

GM has said little. Presumably, Chinese-made cars would enable GM to cut costs, and in the hypercompetitive global auto world of crippling labor costs and shrinking profit margins, any advantage counts. American automakers already rely on components made in China to save on costs.
