Of course the spread of Asian food ingredients, dishes and cooking methods has been matched, at the very least, by the diffusion of non-Asian foods and food materials within Asia. This began at least as early as the Columbian exchange -- which is to say five centuries ago and ndash; even if we omit such items as sweet potatoes. But in recent centuries, Europeans in Asia and returning Asians have had at least a modest impact upon traditional indigenous cuisine. Cwiertka (1999: 44) points out that it was Europeans who introduced such vegetables as potatoes, cabbage and onions to Japan in the mid-nineteenth century, and some of these were rapidly assimilated to Japanese cuisine. The far earlier introductions of maize, the capsicums (peppers) and peanuts, all New World cultivars, to China are not credited to anyone in particular; but these,

2009-03-10 Need for rice development strategy

Efisue is sad the Nigeria s rice policy has been inconsistent over the years, oscillating between high import tariffs, import restrictions, and outright ban. For instance, between 1986 and 1994, rice imports were illegal. In 1995, imports were allowed at 100 per cent tariff. In 1996, the tariff was reduced to 50 per cent and become full cycle to 100 per cent in 2002 and partially in 2008. He said domestic rice production has regrettably responded to the various inconsistent policies. Under these circumstances, production will never meet local demand. Always making reference to the Asian countries, Efisue advised that The Nigeria government should adopt the same political will like the Asian countries to address issues of food insecurity especially through improved funding of agricultural research systems.

The good doc says we Americans imperialize so many world cuisines that we should be ashamed of ourselves. American Chinese food is not Chinese," he complains. The classic Chinese dish General Tsos Chicken, after mass-Americanization, is poisoned with sugar: Hunan cuisine is not sweet," he rails. His take on fast-Asian-food chains such as Panda Express is that their menus corrupt otherwise healthy Asian dishes with piles of sugar and fat. And all across America, trendy pan-Asian" restaurants, well marketed and much ballyhooed by the media, systematically slaughter every cuisine they touch. Its like watching General Patton enter every national kitchen in Asia with his tank.

2009-06-03 The Edmond Sun - From food vendors to city culinary traditions

While the Asian District in Oklahoma City was at one time home to the majority of restaurants that serve Asian food in Oklahoma City, those establishments are now also located throughout the city and its suburbs. Vietnamese noodle shops are now in strip shopping centers from Norman through Edmond. And some convenience stores in the Oklahoma City area operated by Asian immigrants are now beginning to sell items such as egg rolls and fried rice as fast food items that can be purchased from drive-through windows

2009-04-09 WU students protest food contract

Maybe the "Martin Yan asian food area" is the solution to the Great Wall problem, but Chartwells cant honestly say this, or any other part of the contract renewal, is what the students wanted based on the survey. The only survey I remember was a computerized bubble sheet sent from their headquarters and had no questions that were Washburn-specific in any way. Students were told they could fill it out and get a free candy bar, which is probably a much bigger reward than it sounds considering that candy probably sells for usd. 2 at Chartwells. Washburns Student Government was in the process of forming a food service committe, hoping to find a Chartwells alternative before a deal like this was singned. And we werent the only ones left out of the loop with the contract being signed over Spring Break. The day we got back from break, one

The 4th EAS Summit this year has provided an important opportunity to accelerate the formal establishment and operation of the 10+3 regional reserve pool prior to the end of 2009. The current annual East Asia summit listed food security and energy security as one priority of the 10+3 Asian nations, whose leaders have appealed for seeking the balance between the food grains and fuel-use farm crops, so as to beef up the cooperation in the energy sector. Furthermore, the response to climate change and enhanced cooperation against natural calamities has also been a focal point for leaders of East Asian nations.

2009-08-07 Ethnic groceries 101: Whole Foods

What would a foodie do without Whole Foods Well, wed probably spend less money, but before Whole Foods arrived in Vegas, I spent more time driving around town to places like the International Marketplace, small, locally-owned specialty stores, etc. Confession: I do really love Whole Foods, but theres a reason I have called it -- along with everyone else -- Whole Paycheck. A few weeks ago, the friendly marketing folks at Whole Foods invited me to rethink that statement and take a so-called "value tour" of the store. It was led by a lovely store representative who also happened to be a trained chef, could answer any question, and fed me some great samples, including goat milk ice cream (yum). I was already very familiar with Whole Foods fairly affordable 365 in-store brand, which I stick to as much as possible. Heres a

2009-10-29 A Brief History of McDonalds Abroad - TIME

Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see the corporate juggernaut as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism, and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their cherished national cuisines. Bermuda banned all fast-food restaurants to squelch a McDonalds planned for island. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a band of activists destroyed a McDonalds under construction to protest globalization and "bad food. " The next year, a bomb detonated in a French McDonalds, killing a 27-year-old employee. No one claimed responsibility.

2009-05-06 Review: A grand tour of Asian cuisine : Dining_Out : Naples Daily News

My love affair with Asian food started when I was four and my parents took me to a Chinese restaurant is my hometown of Milan, Italy. Later on I tried, and loved, Japanese food and became a sushi addict. One by one I started exploring all the other cuisines of Southeast Asia from Indonesian to Korean, from Thai to Vietnamese. Turns out I love them all. So it goes without saying that I couldnt have been happier when I saw Dave Wongs Pan Asian and Sushi opening a stones throw away from my house a few months ago.

2009-04-04 Restaurants A region rich in Asian markets Seattle Times Newspaper

Walking into Lynnwoods new H Mart complex, I was transported by this gleaming mall-like setting. Yes, there are ceramic crocks for fermenting kimchi, pots for dol sot bot and mini metal chopsticks for baby in the vast housewares department, but Riedel Vinum stemware Sweet. This is my kind of supermarket: banchan samples on busy weekends, rice crackers made on-premise and an aisle devoted solely to seaweed. Pop-Tarts and Froot Loops face off with anchovy dashi and shaved bonito, Vlassic pickles share shelf space with fermented soy beans, and boxes of Barilla with bags of banh pho. The Korean marts meat department is an extravagance of culinary zoology, selling rabbit, frog legs, goat meat and pheasant. I could happily get lost in the spacious produce department. Ditto for the spotless seafood section, a symphony of sea treats sold
